PULSE
Light Fingered In association with the Auckland PRIDE festival 2009
10 - 21 February 09
I burn the whiteness of your fingers with kisses...
Unknowing where her fingers strayed...
Tricky-fingers Sappho, that peerless crooner (Jong)
And so we steal a little from Sappho. We pickpocket her finger-phrases and anachronistically appropriate them for our exhibition’s thematic narrative.
And because we are light-fingered we borrow from many sources.
Romaine Brooks was ‘the thief of souls’, piano players practice to perfect 5-finger exercises, KFC unsuspectingly promotes ‘finger-licking good’. Our legacy insists we visit multiple sites and claim them as our own.
Our artworks offer adroit and nimble female fingers. We have spotted fingering frogs and feline-esque females. We have the stealing of souls….and the legacy of the Paris salons. We have the post-modern ironic ‘lesbian’ movements of the 21st century and twist them to fit our belief in a necessary lesbian future.
We steal when we need to. We take what is ours.
