Saturation
This series of paintings follows on from my last exhibition at Satellite Gallery.
The protagonists are still horses and the settings still incorporate fabric-like folds and liquid-like pools. These horses however are now full-bodied creatures, rather than head-only. The colours are more intense and the themes are more obvious.
These horses are clearly part of wedding-like rituals. There is a sense of them being part of a structured society. They are taking part in the ceremonies, but often bleeding. Because of the moment-in-time nature of a painting they will continue to bleed, never actually dying. Along with the blood there is also heroism, love and passion - ingredients of tragedy.
The aim is for the elements of painting to still dominate the literary and illustrative qualities. The title of the previous exhibition was ‘Depth’ and the over-riding aim was to achieve some kind of depth in the paintings. My upcoming exhibition is titled ‘Saturation’; the lighting and colours are kept in saturated form (and the ground is saturated in blood).
