Couture fashion and jewellery evening at Satellite: Mia Straka, resident Satellite jeweller and Brooke Tyson, her equally talented fashion designing sister present their latest collections. Come along for an evening of clothes, jewellery and wine.
Cash sales on the night Thursday 15th May, 7 - 10pm @ Satellite.
As little girls living hundreds of miles apart….Brooke and Mia were both busy climbing trees and swordfighting with the boys, stopping only for regular costume changes.
Little did they know that almost 20 years later they would become family through marriage and gleefully discover a mutual passion in their respective businesses as fashion designer and jeweller, a match made in girly heaven!
Channelling their love of dress ups and entrepreneurial enthusiasm the sisters in law
spent their early twenties gaining experience in their chosen fields. Brooke began as Meg’s right hand lady, making sure the ladies about town had the perfect fit. Late nights were spent decking out her nearest and dearest in Brooke Tyson originals before working full time on her eponymous label in 2005.
Mia graduated from a design degree and gained experience as jewellery assistant and exhibitor within New Zealand before spreading her wings to work in London and Switzerland. Returning to New Zealand in 2005 the then 25 year old set up Mia Straka Jewellery and started marrying off her friends with bespoke bling.
It was a natural progression for the two to launch themselves in tandem at 2007 AirNZ Fashion Week with complementary collections. Brooke was inspired by the thrill of discovery forgotten treasures in Nana’s chest of memorabilia to create the Heirloom range for Winter ‘08. From floor skimming metal-hued jersey gowns to soft-green woollen waistcoats the designs give a jaunty nod to old-school style and craftsmanship.
Mia took this idea a step further hanging commanding bronze keys from antiqued industrial chain, referencing the power objects can have in unlocking memories and shared histories.
The latest offering is Summer 09: Caravan of LOVE. Brooke had the new gypsy-inspired collection photographed at the Straka homestead in the Bohemian settlement of Puhoi. Borrowing her Mum’s vintage caravan, models Mia and Lee-Anne slunk around in a fantasy trailer as the jewelled palette of floaty silks slipped around them. Mia drew from her historical roots, translating the pioneering free spirit into necklaces of white porcelain birds swinging at the waist. Piercing blue lapis lazuli beads accent the bright white with hints of gold bringing the jewellery to life against emerald green and peacock blue raw silks.
About to embark on a road trip around New Zealand to present the Summer 08 range, the adventurous design duo are excited about their future. Continuing to experiment with ideas and materials, colours and form; Brooke and Mia create costumes for the wild at heart.

Satellite Gallery Staff have become part of the subject matter behind Jade du Preez upcoming exhibition Beside The Point opening on the 6th of May 5.30 - 7pm and running till the 18th.
Jade's artistic study of the people that co-exist alongside art in a gallery provides much thought over where art begins and ends inside the viewing space.
She will be presenting larger than life portraits of gallery staff in their working habitats. Viewing the portraits of Satellite staff in Satellite with the pictured staff working away in the background will be a unique experience in conceptual thinking.
Despite the strength of the concept, Jade's works stand alone as beautiful pieces of refined drawing. Jade's du Preez command of fine line and monochromatic colour make for precise and rich work with an impressively distinct style.

Where walls are painted white and sound is kept to a minimum to maximize arts effect, just how exactly do staff members influence an artworks impression?

Welcome to the new and improved Satellite persona!
Now that Satellite Gallery has become more firmly established in the creative community we have refreshed our identity with a new logo and are now providing more information and support for artists and art enthusiasts through this new site.
This new look and upgraded site herald in a new era for Satellite as we continue to realise our potential as artist focused providers of opportunity for emerging talent. The visionaries at The Depot Artspace wanted to create a professional and refined atmosphere in which emerging artists could exhibit in the central city and show off their creativity to a whole new audience. Seeing this vision evolve into reality has been amazing!
We would especially like to thank Kim Crawford Wines for the continued generous support they provide for Satellite and all our emerging artists.
