Jonathan Hopcroft
Jonathan is a contemporary jeweller living in Auckland, who exhibits and sells his innovative work around New Zealand. His award winning jewellery is a lesson in clean line and intricate detail.
With a dedicated understanding of form and texture, Jonathan’s unique shapes hold an immediate fascination. His beautiful objects appear strangely familiar, as if to mock utility and its prescribed aesthetics.
His understanding use of metal gives Jonathan’s pieces an industrial feel with a refined finish, the treatment of each metal revealing the material’s full spectrum of potential. Using innovative techniques with a solid base in traditional metalworking, he sculpts each form to its own abstracted perfection, charming the viewer with the curiosity of his shapes.
This love of the jewellery making process comes from qualities he has had since he was a boy: a need to create, and an affinity for metal. After growing up painting, playing music, fixing engines and forging knives, these interests converged into making jewellery.
Although he is among the youngest established jewellers, he has made his mark in many aspects of the craft. As well as his contemporary work, he makes a range of more traditional wedding and engagement rings; he has worked on Hollywood movies, making samurai armour and crowns; and also taught at Unitec, one of the best known jewellery schools in New Zealand.
