Celebrating our Cultural Icons
Interviews with iconic New Zealanders who have shaped our arts & culture scene
Jam Radio, like Satellite Gallery, is an offspring of Depot Artspace. They are currently producing an invaluable asset to New Zealand’s arts sector with its ‘Cultural Icons’ programme; an accessible, informative and compelling series of interviews that will inspire generations to come.
In December 2009 Jam Radio received ARST (Arts Regional Services Trust) funding from North Shore City Council to create a series of interviews with iconic New Zealanders who have shaped the arts and culture scene over many years. The inspiration and impetus for the Cultural Icons project is to provide archives that capture the ideas, histories and personalities of these significant contributors. The project is ongoing, with audio and film from the interviews made accessible online.
The dialogues are between friends and contemporaries and so far form a fascinating cultural genealogy. Hamish Keith, writer, art curator, arts consultant and social commentator interviews his long-time friend, the artist and conservationist, Barry Brickell; Martin Edmond, noted NZ novelist, essayist and author of 'The Resurrection of Philip Clairmont’ (1999) interviews Philip Clairmont’s partner Rachel Power and poet, biographer, musician and ecologist Denys Trussell interviews friend Dean Buchanan, painter.
Warm, informed and often intimate, the interviews are a rare insight into these iconic kiwi’s creative journeys, their youthful ambitions, their hurdles, successes and their contributions within the New Zealand creative and cultural landscape.
Interviews completed to date include:
Nigel Brown interviewed by Denys Trussell
Barry Brickell interviewed by Hamish Keith
Martin Rumsby interviewed by Julian McCarthy
Dean Buchanan interviewed by Denys Trussell

Creative Communities Scheme funding changes
The Creative Communities Scheme (CCS) is a fund made available by Creative New Zealand to all local Authorities for encouragement of Arts activity within our communities.
Creative New Zealand has adopted new Criteria for the Creative Communities Scheme to be adopted from 1 July 2010. Under the new criteria this funding source is for you if your creative activity or event will encourage:
• Broad community involvement – The project will create opportunities for local communities to engage with and participate in arts activities.
• Diversity – The project will support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities, enriching and promoting their uniqueness and cultural diversity.
• Young people – The project will enable and encourage young people (under 18 years) to engage with and actively participate in the arts.
Please note, due to the local government amalgamation taking place this year, a change of timing means all Creative Communities Scheme grants for the 2010/2011 financial year are being allocated at this time. There will be no further funding allocations until the latter half of 2011.

Abby Storey's Opening night and the Photography Festival
It was great to see so many artists and photographers at the opening of Abby Storey's exhibition Touchstones, and to see people get involved with the Photography Festival. Especially nice to see photographers with their cameras to support and document the opening nights. A big thank you to Richard Smallfield and John B Turner.
